April 19, 2018 I returned to speak with 7th graders at Davis Middle School in Hampton, Virginia. They read Samuel Wilbert Tucker: The Story of a Civil Rights Trailblazer and the 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-in. Then they researched violent and nonviolent protests, created posters about people who made a difference in their world, and created a Lego wall of words that inspired them to overcome adversity and obstacles.

Students were so ready for my visit. They  came with knowledge and questions demonstrating  they were intensely engaged with  the story of ordinary young people who staged a sit-in at a public library in 1939 to challenge segregation and the right to read in a public library.

These students took away the idea that they have the power to make a difference in their lives and their communities by standing up for justice, equality and opportunity.

Davis students had thoughtful questions, inspiring further research,  leading to a deeper understanding of how they fit into the arc of history.
