Meet the author, Nancy Noyes Silcox, and hear about A Place Called Home: The Story of German Immigrants from Cincinnati, Ohio to New Ulm, Minnesota 1856-1862.

It’s the story of young Carolina Beck and her family who are driven from Cincinnati, Ohio, by rising hostilities toward immigrants. They travel by steamboat to New Ulm, Minnesota, in 1857. Searching for economic security and the freedom to follow their German customs and traditions, they face unexpected challenges learning to survive in a new town on the Minnesota frontier. Constructing a house, securing food, building a community and defending their town during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 test their courage, persistence and resilience in this coming-of-age story. A Place Called Home is historical fiction based on memoirs, personal accounts and historical research.
