Telling Samuel Wilbert Tucker’s story in the Alexandria, VA church his family attended and where he played the piano, was especially meaningful for me. I was thrilled to be invited and pleased so many people, including neighbors, wanted to know more about Tucker and his work to desegregate public libraries and public schools. The sit-in he planned at the Alexandria Library in 1939 is the earliest-known civil rights sit-in at a public library.
The delicious cake at the reception after my presentation was beautifully decorated with the cover of the biography of Tucker that I wrote.
